Blast From The Past ! "Apostles"

This group frequented many a street corner in the late 60's and early 70's.Singing their hearts out on Beech St., Long Beach ,N.Y.,outside one of the first Chinese take outs known as Ping Pong's...Many a summer night succumbed to their sweet vocal harmonies. On occasion they could be heard harmonizing Doo Wop melodies tucked into the entrance of the liquor store off of Ave.U & E.19 St. in Brooklyn. Great echo in there !...In 1971, they recorded "Do You Remember" for Capitain Studios in East New York.. It was never released and only two copies were ever pressed on the Demo Vox label. Only one is still known to exist, which enabled it an air play on Don K. Reeds Doo Wop Shop, on WCBS FM......from your left to right...Mike Knox..lead vocals, Tom Martino...bass/baritone, Bob Monti...First tenor/falsetto, Stevie Knox..second tenor.....Hats off gentleman !

For A Nickle I Will !

When I was A kid my mother decided it was time for me to learn the value of a dollar. So she gave me a nickle a week allowance ! Of course I had to earn it. Along with the nickle came responsibility and chores to do around the house. I was already doing chores so I really didn't understand that. But wow ! a nickle, what could I do with that. I took my nickle and walked up E.19th St. towards Ave U. Now right outside Harvey Cleaners was a great gumball machine set up. One side with pistachio nuts and the other with large mixed colored gumballs. No, I think I'll continue up past the butcher shop on the corner.Turning the corner on the left was a toy store and hobby house with a hand crank machine outside that you could view all the old fights. Boxing would never be the same ! Decisions, decisions or I could go across the street to the Big Apple supermarket and get a giant pickle out of the barrel....or..maybe across to the corner candy store,Ruby's Soda & Fountain, where Sandy made the best egg creams in Brooklyn and get myself a nice candy bar. I couldn't take it anymore I just had to watch the fights...wow great ! Then I realized  I had to wait another week for 5 cents more. Any way my allowance was short lived on many occasions for one reason or another. Justifiable only to mom. She would get upset that I kept buying candy or watching the fights. The clincher was when I started trading the big nickle for my younger brother's little dimes. Is it my fault he wanted the bigger coin ? I walked into my bedroom huffing and puffing that she took my allowance away again. I mean what did she expect me to do with it ? ...."Your supposed to save it"...I heard from the kitchen... How does she always know what I'm thinking ?

Strange Thoughts !

It's funny as you get older how your mind drifts back to the past sometimes. I was just sitting here and my mind started to wander back to a corner candy store on Ave U and E. 18Th St. There was a gas station across the street that my dad once worked in as a mechanic. Anyway, this was your typical candy combination grocery store of the day. Very colorful ! All the old Pepsi and Coke signs.7 Up sign with the thermometer in it. All the old fashioned bowls and jars full of sweets. The kind of place you were very comfortable walking into. I remember how we would go in as kids and linger forever making up our minds to buy candy. Yet the owner never got angry or yelled at us.The old timers were great !... Just a different time and place. I would stare at the 2 ft long liquorice sticks and then buy a box of candy cigarettes and a roll  of candy dots ! Right outside the store the pavement was packed with what seemed like thousands of bottle caps. We would dig them out, take them home, melt and fill them with some colorful wax or crayon and then shoot a great game of Skelly ! .... Strange thoughts to be having in 2009. Don't you think ?
